FOR TEACHERS

HELPFUL RESOURCES
If time permits, we suggest using the resources on our site to give your students a foundational understanding of news literacy by introducing them to key background and history, and even hands-on reporting and writing exercises.
HOW TO INVITE A JOURNALIST
Contact us and Journalists for News Literacy will locate a journalist in your community who is eager to visit your classroom. If you know a journalist who would like to visit but doesn't have time to prepare a talk, we suggest inviting them for a guided Q&A with the class.

WHAT TO EXPECT
If you and a journalist agree to set up a classroom visit, the reporter will speak with your students for up to an hour about how news is produced, how to judge valid sources from fake stories, and the differences between broadcast TV, newspapers and the Internet. We encourage journalists to personalize each lecture so no talk will be exactly the same. We encourage you to speak with the journalist beforehand if you have specific learning objectives in mind.

WHY DO IT?
Your students are exposed to an unprecedented amount of information. Even your brightest students will struggle to make sense of where to find valid, trustworthy, non-partisan news. Journalists filter and provide information for a living. By inviting one to your class, you will provide your students with an invaluable primer on how to consume news and a citizen’s responsibility in the Information Age.
